Post by WHS Tuesday, February 24, 2009 - 1:41 pm Headline in the news today: Sullenberger Warns Pays Cuts Driving Out Best Pilots He may be right. And this very warning could probably be issued for many other jobs which demand high levels of skill to perform well. We place our lives in many of these people's hands. What is scary is that in the current climate of political correctness we are socially promoting people into positions where they are not qualified to be responsible for our lives. Be it the surgeon operating on you or the pilot at the controls of a plane you are on, would you want someone in charge that is there because we have decided that numeric representation in these critical fields must proportionally reflect the demographics involved? We should pay truly qualified people top dollar for their services and hold them accountable for failure to the maximum extent. But, we simply MUST hold those who are not truly qualified to the highest standards without making believe that they are qualified when they are really not. As we dumb down our culture by reducing competition based on merit in the name of maintaining equality and the self esteem of less qualified individuals, we are asking for serious trouble. As we lower the standards so that less qualified people can populate the ranks of critical positions, we are playing with fire. And as we demand less and less from our citizenry, especially our children, to avoid facing the hard truths of the real world where merit truly does count, we are losing our talents as a culture. Soon, there won't be enough truly qualified people available for these critical positions even if we finally decide that we really do need the highest standards in these complex areas. |
