I don't mean to be churlish here and it seems to me that many people fear even broaching the subject of race, especially in these "post racial" times we live in, what with Obama now occupying the White House.

My question is this: why do we say that Obama is our first black president? For the same reason he is called black, he could be called white. Yet, we do not call him white even though he is half white as well as half black. After all, the equation is rather simple.

That is, 1/2 = 1/2. No?
